The Chicago Office of Tourism has encouraged theatre lovers to consider paying a visit to the city.
Chicago was recently chosen as the first stop on the national tour of Billy Elliot the Musical, which has been performed in New York and will come to the Oriental Theatre at the Ford Centre from 18 March.
The city is home to more than 250 theatre companies and 115 performance venues, which host some 800 productions over the course of a year.
About 5m tickets are sold every year for a 'broad range of theatrical offerings', according to the Chicago Office of Tourism.
People planning to visit the city over the coming months can see performances by some of its award-winning companies, including the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, which was created by a collective of actors.
Visitors can head to the historic downtown theatre district to see major productions or explore some of Chicago's smaller communities to catch less mainstream shows.
