Travellers urged to see 'hidden side' of Paris

People who want a genuine and authentic experience of Paris should explore beyond the city's famous attractions and landmarks, according to a tourism industry spokeswoman.

Veronique Potelet Anty of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau said that first-time visitors to France's capital city understandably want to see sights such as the Eiffel Tower.

For people who make return trips, however, Ms Potelet Anty recommended seeking out new activities such as behind-the-scenes theatre excursions and guided food tours.

She also pointed out that there are several cultural institutes to visit in the city.

'We have more than 140 museums in Paris,' the spokeswoman said.

'Obviously people will go possibly to the Louvre but then the City Hall of Paris for example owns around 50 museums, which are really tiny … and they're free and have permanent collections.'

Visitors who are planning to sample some Parisian food were advised to make use of the city's good food guide, which provides information on establishments throughout the capital, including its 60 Michelin-starred restaurants.
