Holidaymakers urged to sample Turkish wines

People planning to visit Turkey this year have been encouraged to try some of the wines on offer in the country.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK recently launched an initiative aiming to inform people of the wealth of activities on offer in addition to traditional beach breaks.

Turkey has a long history of winemaking and has the world's fourth largest grape growing area after Spain, Italy and France.

The country recently welcomed a number of British wine experts for a tasting tour, which included visits to vineyards in Thrace near Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Irfan Onal, director of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK, said the country was 'honoured' to have hosted high-profile critics including television presenter Oz Clarke.

He added: 'Our aim is to continue increasing awareness of how much the country has to offer visitors in addition to beach holidays - from wine and cuisine to archaeology, art, film and music; all [of] which reflect its huge cultural heritage of more than 10,000 years.'
