People planning to visit South America this year will be offered some new travel options when Qatar Airways expands its network to the continent.

The airline announced that it would introduce flights to Sao Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina over the coming months, with exact launch dates to be confirmed soon.

Five new destinations have already been announced by the carrier, with a service to Bangalore getting underway last month and routes to Copenhagen, Ankara, Tokyo and Barcelona set to begin operating for the summer season.

Qatar Airways also intends to deliver capacity increases on its flights to Goa, Colombo, the Maldives and other destinations from its hub in Doha.

Chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker said: 'These are exciting times for Qatar Airways, looking forward to further expansion in line with our committed strategy to develop our global operations to all corners of the world.'

He continued: 'By adding Brazil and Argentina, we can finally say Qatar Airways has become a truly global airline touching all parts of the world.'

The carrier's fleet recently increased to 80 aircraft, meaning it has doubled in size over the past five years.
