BA plans to serve 60% of customers during first strike
16 Mar 2010

British Airways (BA) has revealed that it expects to keep 60% of its customers flying during the first planned strike by its cabin crew staff on 20, 21 and 22 March.

All long-haul flights to and from London Gatwick and more than half of short-haul services at the airport are set to operate as normal, while London City will be unaffected.

The airline plans to offer more than 60% of its long-haul schedule and around 30% of short-haul flights at Heathrow over the three days.

Overall, BA aims to carry around 45,000 customers each day, with thousands more to be offered seats on alternative flights with the airline or with other operators.

Chief executive Willie Walsh said: 'Due to the numbers of cabin crew who have called in to offer their services over the weekend, the schedule will be slightly larger than we had originally anticipated.

'Despite the desire of Unite's leadership to ground the airline, the flag will continue to fly. Around 60% of our customers will be able to fly as planned and many thousands more can be rebooked onto alternative BA flights or onto rival airlines.'

The airline plans to release timetable information for the second stoppage - scheduled for 27 to 30 March - after the first strike.
