The redevelopment of Terminal 2 at London Heathrow moved 'a step closer' this week with the signing of a contract for the construction of the new building, BAA has announced.
When it is up and running, the facility will provide a new home to Star Alliance carriers based at the airport, such as
bmi,
Air Canada,
SAS and
United Airlines.
BAA said that the building will be 'one of the most modern airport terminals in the world'.
Passengers at Heathrow will benefit from improved services, upgraded facilities, faster connections between flights and other new offerings, according to the operator.
Colin Matthews, chief executive of the airport, said: 'Heathrow is improving and our exciting plans for Terminal 2 reflect our ambition to make passengers' journeys better and position Heathrow as the European hub airport of choice for the world's airlines and passengers.'
Another Star Alliance carrier based at Heathrow is
Singapore Airlines, which recently announced a more eco-friendly departure procedure for its Airbus A380 flights to Singapore from London.
