Travellers planning to visit New Orleans this year will have the opportunity to sample some of the city's cuisine at a number of festivals.

The first major event on the calendar is the 19th annual New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, which will run from 25 to 29 May.

Over 175 wineries take part in the festival, as well as dozens of international experts.

Visitors will be able to enjoy wine dinners at some of the city's top restaurants, one-off tasting evenings and special events at the Louisiana Superdome.

The Louisiana Seafood Festival was founded three years ago and will return from 11 to 13 June this year, providing the opportunity for gastronomes to try everything from alligator to oysters.

Another forthcoming highlight is Tales of the Cocktail, an event running from 21 to 25 July that will bring together chefs, bartenders, cocktail experts and authors.

People planning to visit any of these events this year can catch flights to New Orleans with carriers such as United Airlines and Continental Airlines.
