Desire to take holidays 'stronger than ever'
23 Mar 2010
British consumers' desire to take holidays is 'stronger than ever this year', according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).
The organisation teamed up with Wanderlust magazine to conduct research into the current climate of the travel industry and found widespread optimism.
More than 60 tour operators were surveyed, with two-thirds (67%) saying they have seen an increase in bookings this year and a further 15% reporting that demand has been consistent with the same period in 2009.
The overwhelming majority (90 per cent) of respondents predicted that bookings during the next quarter will stay the same or improve from last year's figures.
AITO chairman Derek Moore said: '2009 was a challenging year for travel companies and while Britain's exit from the recession is slow, we know that people are less willing to forego holidays these days.
'It's encouraging to see just how positive consumer plans are for travel in 2010; tour operator bookings show that the desire to take holidays in 2010 is stronger than ever.'
Wanderlust conducted a survey earlier this year for its annual awards event, finding that Namibia, Oman and New Zealand are the three most popular countries among its readers and Singapore Airlines, Etihad and Air New Zealand are the top carriers.
