Visit Finland has highlighted the significance of easyJet's new flights to Helsinki, which are set to begin operating from Manchester airport on 28 March.

The tourist board said the new service will give British travellers 'the perfect excuse to embark on a stylish city break to Helsinki or venture further afield to discover the ancient town of Porvoo, the Ekenas Archipelago or enjoy the last of the snowfall in Lapland'.

People with an interest in art and design will find plenty to interest them in Helsinki, according to Visit Finland.

The city was recently voted World Design Capital for 2012 and is home to several fashion boutiques and emporiums selling everything from furniture to glass ornaments.

Another experience on offer to Helsinki visitors is taking a ferry trip to Suomenlinna, a maritime fortress that was built on six islands in the 18th century to protect the country from Russian attack.

Travellers who enjoy exploring the outdoors can take a train or bus from Helsinki to the Ekenas Archipelago National Park, which encompasses about 1,300 islands that are connected by a network of ferries and boats.

EasyJet's flights to Helsinki will operate four times a week from Manchester on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
