San Francisco boasts a number of characteristics that make it popular among foreign visitors, many of which are similar to aspects of European destinations, according to a spokesperson for the local tourism industry.
Research firm STR recently released a report on the US hotel industry in February, which showed that San Francisco posted the largest increase in occupancy compared to the previous year.
Occupancy levels increased by 13.8% to 65.2% in the California city, while Detroit and New York also reported rises.
Commenting on the trend, Tanya Houseman, media relations manager at the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: 'San Francisco is popular because it's almost a European city within the US - it's diverse with lots of arts and culture, food, beautiful vistas and good weather, including romantic fog.'
She went on to describe San Francisco as 'a vibrant city and one that is laid-back, brimming with culture and full of exciting, distinct and diverse neighbourhoods'.
Attractions that visitors should not miss, according to Ms Houseman, include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Union Square and the California Academy of Sciences.
