Recent years have seen Croatia increase in popularity as a holiday destination for British consumers, according to an expert on the sector.

Meri Matesic, director of the Croatian National Tourist Office in London, said that the currency situation has helped the country, with the economic crisis causing a severe reduction in the value of the pound against the euro.

The eastern European nation still has its own currency, the kuna, meaning that it could offer better value for money than destinations such as Spain and Italy for visitors from the UK.

'Among European destinations, Croatia is obviously one of [the] few left out of [the] eurozone,' Ms Matesic said.

'Based on that fact and also the good value for money it offers, plus the irrefutably stunning natural and cultural beauty, Croatia is increasingly popular among British holidaymakers.'

Highlighting some of the attractions on offer in Croatia, Ms Matesic said that it boasts 'stunning landscapes, medieval cities [and] a spectacular coastline'.

Popular destinations along the country's Adriatic coast include Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik.
