The Qantas Frequent Flyer programme now boasts 7m members, the airline has announced.

Simon Hickey, chief executive of the scheme, said the milestone was achieved following a number of improvements that have been made since the initiative was relaunched in July 2008.

Since then, Qantas Frequent Flyer membership has grown by 32%, with an extra 1.7m people signing up to the programme.

Mr Hickey said: 'We are delighted to welcome our seven millionth member to Qantas Frequent Flyer, which is Australia's premier loyalty program.

'The secret to reaching this milestone is making it as easy as possible for our members to earn points and providing them as many ways to use those points as possible.'

He went on to reveal that the scheme is expected to see further growth in the future, with 8m members targeted by the end of next year.

Qantas operates flights to Sydney and Melbourne from London Heathrow, as well as a domestic network that includes services to Ayers Rock, Perth, Hobart and several other destinations.
