California 'about more than silver screen icons'

California 'about more than silver screen icons'

Holidaymakers visiting California this year will find that the state is about more than iconic sights such as the Hollywood sign, the Golden Gate Bridge and other things they may have seen in films and on television.

Maddy Morgan, PR director for California Tourism UK and Ireland, pointed out that many people feel as if they already know the destination after seeing it so many times on TV and cinema screens.

However, she stressed that 'there is much more to the Golden State than what we see on the silver screen'.

'Many people might not realise that there are world-class ski resorts in Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain, volcanoes in the Shasta Cascade region, natural hot springs in Calistoga and Palm Springs [and] world-class wineries right across the state,' Ms Morgan said.

She also pointed out that there are 'new and exciting' areas to discover within California's big cities, such as Silverlake in Los Angeles and the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego.

The state's tourist board expects visitor numbers to increase by nearly 3% this year, followed by a 4% rise in 2011.
