Bali 'about more than relaxing on the beach'

Bali 'about more than relaxing on the beach'

Travellers planning a trip to Bali in Indonesia will find that there is much more to do on the island than relax on the beach, according to a travel expert.

Paul Bloomfield, commercial editor of Wanderlust magazine, acknowledged that there are several seafront hotspots worth visiting, such as the southerly resort of Kuta and Lovinia in the north.

However, visitors looking for a real experience of Bali were urged to be more adventurous and seek out some of the activities and excursions on offer.

'There's too much to see and do to waste so long beach-bumming,' Mr Bloomfield said.
'Head to Ubud for a dose of culture - a Kecak dance recital at the palace, a gamelan music performance or maybe a shadow puppet show - and a trip to the sacred monkey forest.

'Then lace up the hiking boots and head for the hills - Munduk's a great base for hikes around the central volcanoes.'

Mr Bloomfield also commented on comparisons that have been made between the Indonesian island and Thailand, saying that there are similarities, but stressing that Bali remains 'quite unique'.

Travellers can reach the destination by taking flights to Denpasar with carriers such as Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Qatar Airways.
