Festival to return to Amsterdam's canals

Festival to return to Amsterdam's canals
3 Jun 2010

Amsterdam's canals will prove more popular than ever among tourists this summer when they provide the venue for a major event.

The Grachtenfestival will take place between 14 and 22 August, following its highly successful outing last year.

Classical concerts are staged along two of Amsterdam's main canals during the festival, leading up to a final show on the Prinsengracht, which is performed on a floating stage in front of Hotel Pulitzer.

Soloists from the Opera Studio Nederland regularly perform at the event, as well as orchestras and musicians from elsewhere in Holland and around the world.

In addition to the main concerts, the Grachtenfestival features a programme of activities and entertainment designed to appeal to babies, toddlers and teenagers.

More than 160 shows and events took place during the festival last summer, attracting nearly 70,000 visitors to Amsterdam.

Also due to take place in the Dutch capital this year is the Pride festival, which will run from 5 to 8 August.
