Long Island beach named best in US
7 Jun 2010

A beach in Long Island in the state of New York has been ranked top in a list of the best coastal destinations in the US.

Coopers Beach in Southampton took first place in an annual ranking published by Dr Stephen P Leatherman, director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research.

The survey is produced on the basis of 50 different factors, including water and sand quality, safety, environmental management and weather.

Coopers Beach is the first location in the state of New York ever to be ranked first in the list.

Moke McGowan, president of the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: 'While Long Islanders have always known and appreciated the quality of our beaches, it's particularly gratifying to be recognised as having the number one beach in the country by no less an authority than Dr Stephen Leatherman.

'Both Main and Coopers beaches have been recognised in the past as being among the top ten beaches in the country - and to now hold the top spot is especially significant when you consider the quality of the company we're in.'

Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida took second place in the list, while Coronado Beach in San Diego, Cape Hatteras in North Carolina's Outer Banks and Main Beach in East Hampton, New York completed the top five.
