Cyprus visitors urged to explore countryside

Travellers planning a trip to Cyprus this year will be making a 'big mistake' if they do not take the chance to explore the countryside, according to a tourism industry spokesperson.
Lillian Panayi of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) said that visitors can enjoy a more genuine experience of Cypriot culture if they get away from the main tourist centres.
She also pointed out that the island's similarity to the UK in driving terms makes it easy for British visitors to hire a car and go exploring.
'It would be a big mistake not to drive into the countryside and it's very easy to drive around Cyprus - we drive on the left and all the road signs are in English,' Ms Panayi said.
'To get into the small towns and villages is great, to dust off all the cobwebs and just to chill out.'
The CTO recently published a survey which suggested that 58% of travellers enjoy sampling local cuisine when they are on holiday.
Ms Panayi recommended trying kleftiko lamb during a break in Cyprus, as well as the island's fresh fruit and vegetables.
