Visits to London attractions proved a popular option in May, the city's tourism agency has revealed.

Statistics released by Visit London show that a representative selection of 34 sites across the capital welcomed some 3.34m visitors during the month, 1.2% more than the previous year.

Free attractions recorded a 7.2% year-on-year increase in visitation, while the number of tourists at smaller, paid-for sites jumped by 42%.

May's two bank holidays contributed to the strong figures, along with high-profile events such as the Chelsea Flower Show.

Visit London chief executive Sally Chatterjee said: 'It's great to see a rise in visitor numbers from this time last year. It's a clear sign that despite the tough economic conditions, London remains a destination that people from all over the globe love to come to.

'The figures for small paid-for attractions are particularly pleasing. London is not just about a handful of world-famous attractions. It is also home to a huge number of wonderful niche and special interest exhibitions and experiences.'

London is home to numerous free attractions, such as the highly popular Natural History Museum and Science Museum in Kensington.
