Travellers 'running a risk by not getting vaccinations'
30 Jun 2010
Travellers have been reminded of the importance of vaccinations following research which found that many people are heading abroad without getting recommended jabs first.
Insurance provider LV= carried out a survey which found that a quarter (26%) of people who have taken overseas breaks in the past year did not get vaccinations for illnesses such as hepatitis A, typhoid and diphtheria.
One in five (19%) failed to seek medical advice and were unaware of potential health risks they could face, while 7% ignored advice to get an injection to protect against diseases.
Cost is one of the main factors in the reluctance to get jabs, with travellers heading to destinations such as Thailand, Mexico and India facing an average bill of £93 for recommended medical precautions.
John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= travel insurance, said: 'The world is a smaller place than it was a few decades ago and it's becoming normal for holidaymakers to travel to far-flung destinations.
'But while holidaymakers are becoming more adventurous, this research shows they don't always consider the health risks of travelling to exotic destinations.'
The survey also found that just over a third (35%) of travellers carry a first-aid kit and a fifth (20%) regularly ignore advice to drink only bottled water.
