People planning a trip to one of Holland's biggest cities this year will have the chance to attend some major events across the country.

The Netherlands Board of Tourism released a list of some of the highlights of the summer 2010 events calendar, starting with SAIL 2010 in Amsterdam.

Returning from 19 to 23 August this year, the event takes place every five years and features impressive spectacles including a maritime parade of old-fashioned boats, high-tech vessels and warships.

Travellers can also head to The Hague to visit the urban beach of Scheveningen, which will host a series of pyrotechnic displays on Friday nights in July and August leading up to the International Fireworks Festival from 19 to 21 August.

There will be plenty of music to enjoy in Rotterdam when the North Sea Jazz Festival comes to the city from 9 to 11 July, followed by the Ortel Summer Carnival on 30 and 31 July.

Other forthcoming highlights include the Preuvenemint culinary fair in Maastricht (26-29 August) and National Heritage Day in Utrecht (11 September).
