Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, north Tunisia and Antalya in Turkey are the year's top three beach holiday destinations, according to research by Kelkoo.
The comparison site commissioned a study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research which rated coastal holiday locations on criteria including climate, affordability, security, quality of food and attractions.
Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt and the Algarve region in southern Portugal also featured in the top five, while the Indian hotspot of Goa and Dubrovnik on Croatia's Adriatic coast featured in sixth and seventh positions respectively.
Bulgaria's Black Sea coast was found to be the most affordable destination when accommodation costs, airfares and local prices were taken into account.
Bruce Fair, managing director of Kelkoo UK, said: 'In the current climate, British holidaymakers seem to be more cost-conscious than ever.
'Although Bulgaria, Tunisia and Turkey may not automatically spring to mind when choosing the top beach holiday destinations, they appear to fit the bill most closely when it comes to delivering against the criteria that matter most to UK holidaymakers today - value for money and affordability.'
