New Orleans celebrates tourism recovery post-Katrina

New Orleans celebrates tourism recovery post-Katrina
17 Aug 2010

The New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is this month celebrating the recovery of tourism in the city five years after Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans is once again welcoming millions of visitors every year, despite the aftermath of the disaster and other challenges such as the recession, a downturn in business travel and the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last year, some 7.5m people visited the city, more than double the 3.7m recorded in 2006.

Between January and May this year, New Orleans was the leading destination in the US in terms of revenue per available hotel room, which is an important indicator of success in the accommodation industry.

The city is now home to 300 more restaurants than in 2005, as well as a range of new cultural attractions and upgraded hotels.

It regularly hosts high-profile events, festivals and conventions and will provide the venue for the Super Bowl in 2013.

Travellers can catch flights to New Orleans with a number of carriers, including Continental Airlines, Delta, US Airways and KLM.
