Undersea park to celebrate 50th birthday in Florida
18 Aug 2010
Holidaymakers enjoying a winter break in Florida this year will be able to join in with celebrations to mark the 50th birthday of America's first undersea park.
The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which occupies a 70-mile stretch of Key Largo in the Florida Keys, will host a number of events from 1 to 11 December.
Highlights will include a celebration at the nine-foot bronze Christ of the Deep statue, which was donated by the Underwater Society of America in 1961.
Visitors will also be able to see a world record snorkelling attempt, take glass-bottom boat excursions to view the coral reef or try activities such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing and scuba diving.
A number of restaurants on Key Largo will be serving special dishes and cocktails to mark the occasion.
Travellers can reach the island by arranging flights to Miami or Fort Lauderdale and hiring a car to drive along US Route 1.
