The Royal Museums of Fine Arts complex in Brussels is currently celebrating a figure described as "one of the greatest Belgian artists of the 20th century".

Marcel Broodthaers is the subject of a display launched in July this year which will continue until 26 September.

The exhibition features a selection of pieces by Broodthaers from the archive of the Museum of Modern Art, which boasts the largest public collection of his work.

Known for using everyday objects such as bricks, eggshells, sponges and newspapers in his work, the artist began his career in earnest in 1964, when he embedded 50 unsold copies of a collection of poems in plaster.

He is associated with the trend of installation art that emerged in the late 20th century and had links to surrealist groups in Brussels.

The Royal Museums of Fine Art is also hosting a retrospective dedicated to the sculptor Charles van der Stappen, which will run until 26 September.

Flights to Brussels are available with bmi, British Airways, Brussels Airlines and other carriers.
