More than 1m holidaymakers 'leave bookings to last minute'

Millions of Britons regularly wait until the last minute before making holiday bookings, according to research by Sainsbury's Bank.

The company released a survey which showed that this year, 1.28m people booked their summer breaks less than two weeks before their date of departure.

Some 528,000 travellers made their reservation a week before setting off on their holiday, while 290,000 respondents finalised their booking just 48 hours in advance.

According to Sainsbury's Bank, people who waited to the last minute before arranging their break could have saved hundreds of pounds.

The company's research revealed that Turkey was one of the cheapest options for a last-minute trip, with an average price of £426 for seven days away.

Last-minute deals to Greece were available for around £520 this summer, according to the survey, while Spain (£670) was also an affordable option.

Abta - The Travel Association predicted that 1.8m Brits would go abroad over the August bank holiday weekend, visiting popular hotspots such as the Balearic Islands, Egypt and Orlando.
