Asia leading international tourism growth

Asia leading international tourism growth
3 Sep 2010

Asia was at the forefront of the growth in international tourism in the first half of the year, according to new figures.

The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) revealed that tourist arrivals around the world increased by 7% in the first half of 2010 compared to the same period last year.

Growth was particularly strong in May (10%) and June (8%), following a modest increase in April as a result of the volcanic eruption in Iceland and its effect on the European aviation industry.

Asia is experiencing a 'very dynamic rebound' from the global economic downturn, the UNWTO revealed, with Sri Lanka experiencing a 49% rise in visitor numbers year-on-year and Japan (36%), Vietnam (35%) and Myanmar (35%) also seeing substantial increases.

The figures showed positive trends in tourist arrivals all over the world, with the Americas experiencing steady growth and Africa continuing its development, having been the only region to report a year-on-year increase in visitor numbers in 2009.
