The Tallinn City Tourist Office and Convention Bureau has revealed that the destination is ready to welcome visitors in 2011, when it will assume the official title of European City of Culture.

Maret Poldveer, marketing coordinator for the agency, said preparations in the Estonian capital are going 'fairly well'.

'The majority of the programme for the next year is confirmed and there is something for everybody to enjoy throughout the year,' she commented.

'From the infrastructure and hospitality point of view, I believe that Tallinn is also ready to welcome all the tourists as well as performers.'

Ms Poldveer offered some recommendations for travellers who will be visiting the city for the first time next year, highlighting attractions such as the old town, the tower at St Olav's church and the viewing platforms on the Toompea hill.

The European City of Culture programme was launched by the EU in the 1980s and has previously featured destinations such as Athens, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid and Stockholm.
