Sicily 'a good option for a cheap break'

Sicily 'a good option for a cheap break'
6 Sep 2010

Travellers visiting Sicily will get good value for money if they plan their trip well, according to the Italian State Tourist Board.

Stefania Gatta, a spokesperson for the agency, said part of the reason that some people see the island as expensive is the fact that some package holidays include stays in high-end hotels.

She encouraged travellers to carry out their own searches for flights and accommodation to save money.

'Sicily is actually cheaper than other regions in Italy,' Ms Gatta said. 'If you go independently then you can eat really well at reasonable prices and you can find cheaper accommodation now.'

The spokesperson also highlighted the range of experiences on offer to visitors, with plenty of history and culture to explore in cities such as Palermo and boat trips available to the Aeolian Islands.

EasyJet recently announced that it was extending its route from London Gatwick to Palermo, offering year-round flights to the destination for the first time.
