Dubrovnik holds an intriguing appeal that ensures travellers regularly return to the city, according to the Croatian National Tourist Office.

Meri Matesic, UK director of the organisation, said that the destination has a 'timeless beauty' that attracts visitors from across the globe, as well as attractions such as the recently opened cable car at Mount Srd.

People considering visiting Dubrovnik were encouraged to arrange their trip in September and October, when the weather is still enjoyable but not too hot and there are fewer crowds.

Ms Matesic said: 'It doesn't matter how many times you visit Dubrovnik, or any other coastal city or island, there will always be something that will intrigue you.

'30% of all UK travellers to Croatia go to Dubrovnik, and every year there are more and more of them.'

The country is also home to more than 1,000 islands and is known for its summer festivals.

According to a recent report from the Post Office, the Croatian kuna was one of the ten fastest-growing currencies for the second consecutive year this summer.
