Frankfurt Tourism has encouraged travellers to arrange a trip to the German city this year to experience its famous Christmas market.

The event, which stretches from Liebfrauenberg across St Paul's Square and the Romerberg to the banks of the Main, will run from 24 November to 22 December.

Dating back to the 14th century, the market was once used by Frankfurt merchants displaying their products and still serves as a showcase for regional specialties such as almond and marzipan biscuits, gingerbread and candied figures made of dried plums.

Visitors can also pick up a range of gifts and souvenirs during the market, from festive decorations and crafts to local pottery and stoneware.

Other popular attractions include the honey shop on St Paul's Square that is set up for the duration of the event and stalls selling baked apples, roasted nuts, mulled wine and other seasonal treats.

Frankfurt's Christmas market will be open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00 local time and on Sundays from 11:00 to 21:00.
