Best-value long-haul destinations revealed
28 Sep 2010
Sri Lanka has overtaken Thailand as the best-value long-haul destination for Britons, according to a new report from Post Office Travel Money.
The organisation revealed that Thailand has slipped to sixth place in its affordability rankings following a turbulent year.
Mexico and Kenya were listed second and third respectively, while Malaysia and Indonesia completed the list of the five cheapest long-haul destinations based on a survey of tourist items such as drinks, sun cream and meals.
The Post Office pointed out that UK visits to Sri Lanka are 'already on a high' and look set to continue growing in the coming months.
Sarah Munro, head of the organisation's travel money division, welcomed the fact that many long-haul destinations are offering low resort costs.
She added: 'The information we have collected shows that Sri Lanka and Mexico offer excellent value for money and, despite having a troubled year, tourists should not write Thailand off either.
'The Thai baht may have strengthened against sterling but tourist prices remain low and there are likely to be great deals to the country as hoteliers and airlines look to continue to attract international visitors.'
