Strong growth has been forecast for Argentina's tourism industry over the coming years, with the industry predicted to expand at a rate of 10% per year until 2020.

Speaking at the launch of the government's plan to promote investment in the sector, tourism minister Enrique Meyer said that 2011 will be 'the year of Argentina'.

During the event, British company Ready to Invest announced a US$300m (£190m) 'wine and lifestyle' development in Tupungato, Mendoza.

It was also confirmed that British Airways would launch direct flights from London to Buenos Aires in March 2011.

Mr Meyer said that of all the countries in South America, Argentina is the best prepared to offer 'superior service and greater customer satisfaction'.

He added: 'In 2010 one of every five tourists travelling to South America and one of every four dollars spent in the region will be in Argentina.

'Nevertheless, this is just the beginning, as tourism in Argentina will grow at a rate of 10% annually until 2020, compared with the world average of 4.1%.'

Florencia Scardaccione, commercial manager of BA Argentina, said the airline's new route had been made possible by strong demand for travel to and from the country.
