Taking holidays after the peak summer season is proving popular among people who want to avoid crowds and save some money, according to research by Tesco Bank.

The company carried out a survey which found that nearly half (46%) of UK adults are considering going abroad from September this year.

Almost a third (29%) of respondents adopting this strategy said they wanted to avoid visiting a destination that was packed with tourists, while the same proportion said they wanted to save money.

On average, British travellers polled by Tesco Bank expect to save about £308 by going away out of season.

John Howells, the company's head of travel money, said: 'In the current climate, many people have been waiting to see if their finances can stretch to a break this year and are hoping late deals will offer them good savings.'

More than half (57%) of people intending to travel abroad from September plan to stay in Europe, while 22% said they would base their choice of destination on where they can get the best bargains.
