Florence exhibition celebrates Bronzino

Florence exhibition celebrates Bronzino
29 Sep 2010

People planning to visit the scenic Italian city of Florence over the coming months will be able to see an exhibition celebrating Bronzino, an influential 16th century painter.

The display opened at Palazzo Strozzi on 24 September and will run until January 2011.

Bronzino was the official portrait painter for Duke Cosimo I of the Medici dynasty in the 1500s and mixed with a number of important figures in Florence at the time, including painter and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini.

He also taught Alessandro Allori, who later came to be known as 'the second Bronzino'.

The Palazzo Strozzi exhibition is the first to be dedicated to the artist and features 90 of his works including a portrait of Eleonora of Toledo, the Spanish wife of Cosimo I, and depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Florence is home to many famous cultural institutes where visitors can expand their artistic horizons, such as the Uffizi, Accademia and Palatine galleries.
