Launch date set for space hotel

Space hotel launch date is set
1 Oct 2010

The world's first space hotel is set to launch in about five years, according to the companies behind it.

Russian space group Energiya and partner America's Orbital Technologies won a tender to construct the space hotel which they hope will be ready by 2016.

The hotel will accommodate up to seven space tourists depending on demand, and will also function as an emergency overspill destination for astronauts.

Russia's Soyuz spacecraft would bring crews and visitors to the station and automated vehicles will keep it stocked with supplies during its orbit.

Energiya hope the project will draw attention to space travel and help attract further investment.

Sergey Kostenko, chief executive of Orbital Technologies, said: "I am pleased to announce our intention to provide the global marketplace a commercially available orbital outpost. The Commercial Space Station will be a valuable addition to the global base of orbital assets."

Virgin Galactic, which is controlled by Richard Branson's Virgin Group is building a space craft that will eventually offer space expeditions for an estimated $200,000.
