Icelandic artist to present new installations in New York

Icelandic artist to present new installations in New York
11 Oct 2010

Art enthusiasts planning a trip to New York over the coming months can see a display of two new sculptural installations by Katrin Sigurdardottir at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Icelandic artist, who lives and works in New York City and Reykjavik, created the works specifically for the Met.

Visitors will be able to see the pieces from 19 October this year to 16 March 2011.

Entitled Boiseries, the installations are full-scale interpretations of 18th-century French rooms from the Hotel de Cabris in Grasse, Provence and the Hotel de Crillon in Paris, both of which are preserved at the museum.

Visitors will be able to look through surveillance mirrors to see inside one of the rooms and walk among panels to explore the other.

The Metropolitan Museum states that the pieces will 'address simultaneously the wonder and the complexities of presenting and viewing a period room as an object in a museum and … provoke self-conscious reflection of the museum experience'.

New York is home to many attractions where visitors can absorb some culture and learn more about the arts, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim.
