The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin

Controversial new exhibition opens in Berlin
18 Oct 2010

A controversial new exhibition telling the story of how Adolf Hitler won over the German people has opened to the public in Berlin.

Up until now, the Nazi leader has not been the subject of any artwork or museum exhibition in the country, even though this period of German history has been a central part of school curriculums for many years.

However, the German Historical Museum has now decided the time is right for an investigation into the cult of personality that surrounded the dictator, with the exhibition Hitler and the Germans, Nation and Crime including a number of artefacts showing how successfully he won the support of everyday people, including children.

These include toy soldiers sporting Nazi uniforms, letters to Hitler from enthusiastic youngsters, church tapestries and numerous examples of official propaganda.

However, Hans Ottomeyer, director of the museum, stressed to Bloomberg that the exhibition does not seek to explore "Hitler as a person".

One of the most-popular attractions with tourists taking cheap flights to Berlin, the German National Historical Museum is also hosting a special exhibition on the post-Cold War reunification of the country until the New Year.
