People planning a trip to Bucharest in the near future have been encouraged to be adventurous and explore the city.

Maria Iordache, director of the Romanian National Tourist Office for the UK and Ireland, said that visitors who are willing to search for out-of-the-way places could come across some rewarding sights and experiences.

'What I would suggest for people going to Bucharest is to look down the back streets and you'll find real architectural gems and local churches,' she said.

Ms Iordache also commented on the general appeal of the Romanian capital, which is growing in popularity among travellers.

'Bucharest is one of the up-and-coming city break destinations,' the tourist office director said.

'There is a fantastic mix of architectural styles, vibrant nightlife, and good tariff[s] at hotels.'

Popular attractions in the city include the Village Museum, which provides an insight into the culture and history of Romania, and the Palace of Parliament.
