Number of solo travellers doubles

The number of Britons choosing to set off on a trip alone has doubled in the last two years, a new survey has shown.

A poll by insurer LV= revealed that 13% of Brits have set off on their holidays alone in the last year, compared with just 6% two years ago, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The single and independent types are not the only ones going it alone, either - 41% were already in a relationship and 27% were married.

When asked why they had decided to leave behind a travelling companion 20% said they were after more of an adventure, 16% said they were happier in their own company and 7% said potential travel partners could not afford to join them.

France, Spain, the USA, Germany and Australia were the top destinations for those travelling alone.

LV= travel insurance managing director John O'Roarke said: ''Holidaying abroad alone offers the opportunity to meet new people and get a whole new outlook on life.

''However, it's also sensible to consider carefully where you visit and also take a few additional security steps to ensure you can relax and enjoy the trip."
