The number of visitors to Singapore in September rose by nearly a fifth compared with figures for 2009.

Visitor numbers were up 18.4% on levels seen in September 2009, the Singapore Tourism Board said in a statement this week.

However, Singapore saw a slight drop in the number of tourists for September despite the city-state hosting the renowned Formula One Grand Prix.

The tourism board reported that tourist arrivals in September totalled 947,000, down from 996,000 in August.

Visitor arrivals in July grew by a record breaking 24.1% to reach 1.1m.

Indonesians made up the largest portion of tourists with 244,000 arriving in September, while South Korea was the fastest-growing market for Singapore's tourism sector.

Hotel occupancies were also down for last month but the city has a vibrant calendar of events planned for the coming weeks, including the Standard Chartered Marathon, the ZOUKOUT music festival and much more.
