Britons taking Christmas shopping trips in New York this year will benefit from 'significant savings' on a range of products, according to Post Office Travel Money.

The organisation has released a new guide showing that fashion fans can pick up some of the best bargains, with prices up to 55% lower than in London.

Parents looking for presents for their children can get more than 45% off the cost of five top toys in New York, according to the report.

A Buzz Lightyear figure was found to be the 'best buy' in this year's survey, at a cost of £50 in London but only £24.27 in New York.

Post Office Travel Money also revealed that men's designer jeans are cheaper in the American city, along with items from top brands such as Diane von Furstenberg and Tiffany & Co.

Sarah Munro, head of the organisation, said: 'After last year's doubling of the duty-free allowance, the ceiling has been raised again to £390 so holidaymakers can bring back higher-priced gifts like the Apple iPad.

'Remember too that additional savings can be made by shopping in stores like Bloomingdales and Macy's, which offer a 10% discount to UK visitors to offset the 8.875% New York sales tax.'
