Rough Guides has launched the World Lens app, which is its first application for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

The free tool showcases 200 images from the travel guide publisher's picture library.

People planning a trip abroad can search the selection for shots of locations they will be visiting during their break and share their discoveries with friends or family via email, Twitter or Facebook.

Users can also pinpoint certain destinations on a world map to ensure they can find them easily and read captions and short essays contributed by Rough Guides' writers.

The app currently features sights and landmarks such as the Amber Fort in Rajasthan, India; the riverside food stalls of Vientiane, Laos and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

Peter Buckley, digital publisher for Rough Guides, said: 'We're really excited to be releasing the first Rough Guides app.

'We know that travellers love inspirational images and there's something about viewing them on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch that really makes them come to life. Our new app will pull you straight off your sofa and into the destination.'
