Rome focusing on new tourism initiatives

Authorities in Rome have unveiled a number of initiatives that are designed to boost the city's appeal to tourists over the coming years.

Speaking at the recent World Travel Market in London, Mauro Cutrufo, the Italian capital's deputy mayor, referred to projects such as the Second Tourism Centre, which has been designed to restyle and update the city's image.

Work on the development is at an advanced stage, with more than half of its attractions set to be opened in 2012-13.

'Rome is bracing itself to meet a whole range of fresh challenges,' said Mr Cutrufo.

'The Second Tourism Centre is an infrastructural organisation based on five separate sub-schemes: conferences, fairs and exhibitions, golf, nautical sports and leisure activities, theme and public parks.'

Highlights will include a new public golf course, the Mare Nostrum aquarium and a revamped waterfront area in Ostia.

Rome is also set to host a Formula 1 grand prix and will bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.
