Iceland welcoming more UK visitors

Iceland welcoming more UK visitors
29 Nov 2010

Iceland experienced a year-on-year increase in UK visitor numbers in October, the country's national tourist board has revealed.

More than 6,500 British travellers visited Iceland during the month, an increase of 7.5% from the previous year.

The latest figures mean that some 52,345 people from the UK travelled to the country between January and October this year.

Sigga Groa Thorarinsdottir, Visit Iceland's area manager for the UK and Ireland, said that 2010 has been 'a strange year' for tourism in the country.

Despite the disruption it caused, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in April raised awareness of Iceland's proximity to the UK and highlighted its potential as a holiday destination, Ms Thorarinsdottir said.

'The eruption also demonstrated how much Iceland has to offer to visitors in terms of its fascinating landscape,' she added.

'2010 visitor figures show a more than confident recovery from the slightly lower visitor figures in 2009 and we hope that they will continue to grow.'
