India is so diverse and rich that travellers need to visit more than once to experience the best that the country has to offer, according to a government spokesman.

Speaking at a press conference for Incredible India, Rajen Habib Khwaja, secretary for the tourism ministry, said that visitors can visit a destination a day and still have a lot to discover.

'India is an experience, and one cannot complete this experience in one visit,' he added.

'We are proud that we get many repeat visitors who want to have different experiences in different regions of India.'

Commenting on plans for the future, Mr Khwaja revealed that the industry will be focusing on rural tourism to ensure that the benefit of growing interest in the nation 'percolates down to the grassroots levels while giving an experience to visitors'.

Adventurous travellers can take advantage of some of the outdoor pursuits and activities on offer in India, such as mountaineering in the Himalayas or white-water rafting on the Ganges.
