KLM adds flight to Miami following Twitter bet

KLM has become the first airline to schedule a flight as a result of a bet placed on the micro-blogging website Twitter.
The bet was agreed after it emerged that the traditional American spring break would coincide with the Ultra Music Festival in Miami from 25 to 27 March next year.
KLM agreed that, if enough people reserved a seat on a flight to the American city before 6 December this year, it would schedule an additional non-stop service from Amsterdam especially for Dutch dance music fans.
It took just five hours for the flight to be filled and the counter has already topped 350 reservations.
Martijn van der Zee, the airline's vice-president of e-commerce, said: 'It became clear to KLM very quickly that the idea of a direct flight to Miami is a popular one among the Dutch dance scene. It's why we took on the bet!
'We can rightly call it a first - the first time KLM will deploy an aircraft following a request on Twitter. Social media are becoming more and more important to KLM to offer information and service to our customers.'
