The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) has teamed up with the Centre Pompidou of Paris to bring some 'masterworks' to Toronto.

A major exhibition organised by the French institute entitled Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde is due to open in the Canadian city on 15 October 2011.

Due to run until 15 January 2012, the display will showcase work by Marc Chagall alongside that of other figures associated with Russian modernism, such as Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich and Natalia Goncharova.

People planning a trip to Toronto late next year will be able to see a total of 118 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and films.

AGO chief executive Matthew Teitelbaum said the gallery is 'deeply grateful' to the Centre Pompidou and 'very excited' to be able to present artworks from the Parisian gallery's collection.

He added: 'The visual relationship - both complementary and contrasting - of Chagall's emotive figurations with the abstractions of the Russian avant-garde tells a compelling and complex story of influence and heritage, contextualising Chagall within the art movements of his homeland for the very first time.'
