Germany set for new visitor record

Germany set for new visitor record
17 Dec 2010

Germany is on course for a record year in terms of overnight stays from foreign visitors, the national tourist board has revealed.

More than 60m overnight trips are anticipated for 2010 as a whole, which would be some 3.5m more than the previous record year of 2008 and 5m more than in 2009.

British travellers have been showing a particularly strong interest in Germany, spending nearly 3.2m nights in the country in the year to September, 14.8% more than in the same period last year.

The German National Tourist Board revealed that a number of marketing initiatives are planned for 2011 to ensure that travellers continue to visit the country, focusing on themes including health and wellness, 125 years of the automobile industry and the Fifa Women's World Cup.

Klaus Lohmann, UK and Ireland director of the tourism agency, said the past year highlights Germany's competitiveness on the global stage.

'Big draws were the Passion Play in Oberammergau, 200 years [of] Oktoberfest and certainly the RUHR.2010 (European Capital of Culture), with more than 2,500 events and exhibitions taking place,' he added.

'The year to come promises more events, both innovative and traditional, and we are looking forward to welcoming new and returning visitors to our country.'
