London City airport has revealed that its social media activity has 'surged' over the past week as a result of the disruptive weather that has hit the UK.

The airport's Twitter account now has some 5,587 followers, which marks an increase of 22% in recent weeks.

More than 650 people have joined the London City page on Facebook to ensure that they are up to date with the base's operations during the wintry conditions.

With more than 150 tweets per day, the airport claimed that its team are 'responding immediately' to all queries and offering regular updates regarding possible delays and cancellations.

Richard Gooding OBE, London City's chief executive officer, said: 'Social media has been a valuable tool during the recent weather disruptions, allowing the airport to send personal messages and to interact with our customers during these uncertain conditions.'

The Docklands base will offer a wider range of flights to sun destinations next year, with British Airways set to launch new routes to Malaga in Spain and Faro in Portugal.
