New York welcomes record number of visitors

New York welcomes record number of visitors
5 Jan 2011

A record-breaking 47.8m people visited New York City last year, mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC & Company chief executive George Fertitta announced yesterday (4 January).

The figure represents a higher-than-projected increase of 6.8% from the previous year and means the city is on course to achieve 50m annual visitors by 2012.

New York's hotel industry performed strongly in 2010, with a record number of rooms sold and added to the city's accommodation offering.

Attendance at the destination's famous cultural institutions also increased last year.

Announcing the figures at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Mayor Bloomberg said: 'The strength of our tourism industry is one of the reasons New York City was less impacted by the national recession than other cities and it continues to be one of the reasons we're growing faster than other cities today.'

He added: 'We're constantly looking for ways to strengthen and diversify our economy and growing our tourism industry is an important part of that work.'

A number of promotions and initiatives have been launched to boost visitor numbers in New York during the winter season, such as NYC Restaurant Week, which will run from 24 January to 6 February this year.
